You can add some depth to your Wisconsin Dells experience at the Bonanza Camping Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Visit the Dells Country Historical Society one afternoon and see how the area used to look!
The Bowman Home, built in 2004, was the home of an area lawyer that founded the Village of Newport on the east side of the Wisconsin River. The house was slated for the wrecking ball in 1981. It was that year, that a group of local people met to save the Bowman house from destruction. They eventually formed a historical society and requested that the common council of the City of Wisconsin Dells assign the Bowman house to the newly formed society as a museum.
After approval, the society made its mission “to educate, preserve, advance and disseminate the knowledge of the history of the Dells County area by displaying items and information where visitors and local people can learn about the Dells area including Old Newport, Delton, Kilbourn City, the Wisconsin River and other local places.”
The home was used as a vacation place for working women from the 1930s to the 1970s and contains furnishings, memorabilia and rooms dedicated to:
- General Joseph Bailey
- Native American History
- The Bennett Gallery
- Lake Delton
- Blacksmith Shop
Other rooms include the parlor, library, dining, screen porch, bedrooms and kitchen showcase pieces from the period like 1800s high fashion and accessories, dinnerware, a restored stove and a lot more.
