Cave of the Mounds

Summer has started to fade into fall, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on fun activities. Fun is a year-round activity. When you’re staying at Bonanza Camping Resort, you can still do many of the same activities as you did in the summer such as fishing, walking, and camping. In fact, some might argue that as the summer heat retreats those activities become more fun. If you want to experience more of nature’s fun, consider visiting one of the National Natural Locations, Cave of the Mounds.

The Caves

cave-bonanza-rv-campingThe Cave of the Mounds was discovered in 1939 and has been open to tours for 78 years. It is the premier cave in the upper Midwest and was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. Tours depart regularly every day of the year barring Thanksgiving, Christmas and Christmas Eve.

The Caves got their name from the Blue Mounds, a famous geographic feature nearby. Workers who were mining limestone blew open the face of the wall and discovered the Caves behind them. They were quite popular and experienced a number of visitors before they could organize official tours that would protect the Caves for future generations.

The Tour

Walking tours will follow paved and lighted paths that are easy enough for all ages. The caves maintain a constant temperature that makes them feel cool in the summer, but warm in the winter. The guided tour will show you a variety of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and more. It is a great way to experience the wonder of nature and to learn more about the world beneath our feet.
